PUBLIC AGENCIES AND HEALTH LITERACY

| Home |

State and local agencies responsible for funding and overseeing public health programs are asking how health literacy research can inform these programs. We also hear that you want to know how health literacy principles can be integrated into program plans, implementation and evaluation.

The field of health literacy is relatively new, and integrates learnings from adult literacy with research around health outcomes. The 2003 National American Adult Literacy Survey included specific health literacy indicators. These new data offer public agencies baseline measures for tracking new efforts and integrating health literacy principles into future programs.

AED's Health Literacy Practice can assist local agencies in:

  • Designing a needs assessment to identify areas in which audiences' low health literacy may affect effective use of local programs and services, or how local programs may not be reaching target audiences due to literacy constraints.
  • Integrating health literacy into program strategies and plans.
  • Developing and implementing health literacy training for agency staff and partners.
  • Reviewing and rewriting publications.
  • Evaluating efforts to integrate health literacy into programs.
