Hospitals or Other Providers and Health Literacy

| Home |

As hospitals grow and specialize, providing care to diverse and larger numbers of patients, it is critical that you provide clear information to ensure that patients can:

  • Find their way;
  • Consent to legal requirements;
  • Follow instructions; and
  • Return when required.

Research shows that patients with low health literacy face increased hospitalization and readmission. They have great difficulty reading and understanding medical instructions and understanding treatment following a hospital stay.

AED's Health Literacy Practice can assist hospitals, clinics, and other providers in:

  • Designing a needs assessment to identify areas in which patients' low health literacy may affect effective use of services.
  • Creating a strategy to integrate health literacy into various services and programs.
  • Developing and implementing health literacy training for patient care staff.
  • Reviewing and rewriting informed consent forms, discharge instructions, signage and postings, and other written communications.
  • Evaluating efforts to integrate health literacy into services.
