Community-based organizations strive to increase community members' access to and use of services to improve their lives. Health literacy principles lower barriers to information so that people can use health information to stay healthy and find the services they need.
AED's Health Literacy Practice can help local organizations in:
- Designing a needs assessment to identify areas in which audiences' low health literacy may affect effective use of local programs and services, or how local programs may not be reaching target audiences due to literacy constraints.
- Integrating health literacy into programs and services.
- Identifying other social services, such as adult literacy or ESL classes, that can help improve health literacy skills.
- Developing and implementing health literacy training for staff and community partners.
- Reviewing and rewriting publications, such as brochures and instructions.
- Evaluating efforts to integrate health literacy into programs and services.
